Movie Monday: To Catch a Thief
After a long sabbatical, I decided to blog something. Fancy that! I finished watching To Catch a Thief with my family last night. The kids have never seen it, and it was the girls’ first Hitchcock movie. I kept lobbying for it, and finally I insisted. I’m glad I did. … Read entire article »

Movie Monday: Foreign Correspondent
Alfred Hitchcock was one of the best directors of the 20th Century. His movies are not provocative societal commentary, he never won a competitive Oscar award, and yet his body of work is not only prolific, but high-quality as well. I am amazed at how many people who have never seen classics like North by Northwest or Rear Window will watch much of the mediocrity that Hollywood churns out. Let me put it to you this way; I’ve never seen a bad Hitchcock film. … Read entire article »

Five-Star Friday: “Anchorage”
This Michelle Shocked song has been a favorite of mine for many years now. I remember seeing the video on MTV back in the 1980s. The song faded from memory until my Residence Director at UW-Platteville played the song at a staff meeting. (To him the song reminded him of old friends scattered around the globe.) He lent me Short Sharp Shocked, and soon after I bought my own copy. The song describes a letter that Michelle received back from her old friend both reminiscing the past and updating on the present. Every time I hear this song, I think of my friend Paul who lives in East Texas (not far from Upshur County where … Read entire article »

I’m going to try and discuss a movie every Monday here in my new home. We’ll see how that goes. The first entry is Topper, a whimsical comedy with Cary Grant. I had it on the DVR and it took a while to watch it because we had to do so with the kids in bed. (The description mentioned “liberate a man from his stuffy wife,” and I didn’t want to expose Jackson to a potential anti-marriage movie at this age.) The plot is simple and at times predictable, but I will maintain that it’s better than most comedies that roll out these days. … Read entire article »

Featured Post: How to turn homework in on time (hopefully)
I know we are not the first parents to struggle with this, nor are we the last. God blessed us with a great son. I could spend a long time listing his great traits here, but I want you to make it to the end of this post. Let’s just say my wife and I are both pleased with how he’s turning out. One challenge we have is homework. … Read entire article »

25 Random things
There’s this “25 Random Things” deal going around on Facebook, so I finally bit and took a crack at it. I thought I would publish it here for posterity’s sake. The one thing I didn’t mention was how much I love Milwaukee. Feel free to comment. … Read entire article »
