Game 1 Summary
Welcome to Butler Middle School in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on a great evening for baseball. There are two outs for the Red Knights in the top of the second, the bases are loaded, and Jackson Strelow is looking at the new pitcher for the Wolverines, Steele Weiss. Jackson has been red-hot as of late, and the fans are hoping for some more runs this inning… …here’s the 1-1 pitch. It gets by the catcher, and here comes Thomann from third base! Oh no! The ball caromed off the boards in back and the catcher is waiting for Sam with the ball. Sam’s out, and the inning is over. … Read entire article »

Web Wednesday: NCAA Academic Progress Rates
Sorry I haven’t blogged much lately, but work and baseball kind of make for a busy life. This week’s WW is something I stumbled upon after reading an article about UWM’s new AD. They referred to the Academic Progress Rates by the NCAA. I’ve been looking for some sort of easy-to-understand data that gives me concrete proof about a school’s emphasis on academics. … Read entire article »

My new exercise plan(?)
I ran with my team on Tuesday. I did a quick sprint around the bases and I was out of breath for about 2 minutes. I’m sick of feeling that way, and last night I decided to do something about it. I ran 2.29 miles while Jackson ride alongside me. It helped to have him there, even though we did not talk for much of it. For now at least, I’ll use this blog as my exercise log. For entertainment purposes, … Read entire article »

In actuality, the jumps from million to billion to trillion are bigger than we often comprehend. Perhaps you have heard or seen this comparison using time: … Read entire article »

Movie Monday: Foreign Correspondent
Alfred Hitchcock was one of the best directors of the 20th Century. His movies are not provocative societal commentary, he never won a competitive Oscar award, and yet his body of work is not only prolific, but high-quality as well. I am amazed at how many people who have never seen classics like North by Northwest or Rear Window will watch much of the mediocrity that Hollywood churns out. Let me put it to you this way; I’ve never seen a bad Hitchcock film. … Read entire article »

Five-Star Friday: “Anchorage”
This Michelle Shocked song has been a favorite of mine for many years now. I remember seeing the video on MTV back in the 1980s. The song faded from memory until my Residence Director at UW-Platteville played the song at a staff meeting. (To him the song reminded him of old friends scattered around the globe.) He lent me Short Sharp Shocked, and soon after I bought my own copy. The song describes a letter that Michelle received back from her old friend both reminiscing the past and updating on the present. Michelle and her friend are in different places geographically and in life, yet they are still friends. Every time I hear this song, I think of my friend Paul who lives in East Texas (not far from Upshur County where … Read entire article »
