Opening Day x 2

Many of the people in this fair city I call home (Milwaukee) are excited for the start of the baseball season. After a long winter, baseball is back. I however am doubly excited, because today is the beginning of two baseball seasons for me. For the Milwaukee Brewers, the first pitch in San Francisco is less than an hour away. I’ll enjoy the Brewers run this season, and hopefully we’ll enter September with a chance to go to the postseason. Nearer and dearer to my heart … Read entire article »

Runner Interference

I was lucky enough to be at NLDS Games 3 and 4 in Milwaukee. I never made it to a postseason game in 1982, and it was nice to make both this time around. The final score on Saturday was 4-1. It was 4-2 briefly but Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino (who looks similar to Steve Buscemi) was called for runner interference. You can read more and see the video here. Dale Sveum astutely called for the runners to go back to third and second, as the rule calls for. I saw the replay at home, and immediately recalled Kent Hrbek’s slide into Jim Gantner that cleared the dugouts and resulted in a melee. It turns out there is a connection between the two. Tom Haudricourt reports in his blog that Yount assisted … Read entire article »

The third scorer

We went to the Brewer game last night with Jackson’s Cub Scout pack, and as usual, I brought along one of our scoring books. We have two books, one of which we take to every pro baseball game we see. The two books have been to 30 combined games in three cities and three ballparks (Miller Park, Yankee Stadium, and Wrigley Field). We even scored a Class A game at Miller Park with some guys named Weeks, Fielder and Gwynn. My dad would keep score from time to time when we went to County Stadium. I began doing it myself. Jackson learned to score when he was four. I try to teach anybody who will learn. I think out two books have been written in by about ten different people. Last night … Read entire article »

Tailgating the “right” way…

Jackson has been to a slew of Brewers games so far in his life. He knows the stadium, understands the game, and loves to be there. However, until Saturday, he had never tailgated at a game. (What kind of derelict father am I?) Well, we remedied that, as Chris, Anthony, Jackson and I went to the game and tailgated. Chris had never tailgated before either (soccer games don’t count – sorry). Here are the keys to goo tailgating at Miller Park or your favorite ballpark. Fresh brats: Precooked will not do here. If you must, boil them ahead, and warm them on the grill. I’m a Usinger’s man myself. Good bakery buns: I prefer Miller’s; my dad prefers Sciortino’s. You need a big roll to hold the brat and fixin’s. Grill: I am … Read entire article »

Don’t think; just throw, meat.

Reading the account of Gagne’s second blown save brought to mind Bull Durham, which is a great baseball movie. Talk about life imitating art. Gagne, who had blown only 10 saves in 187 chances before this season, regretted shaking off Kendall before throwing the fastball to Patterson. “He called a changeup and I shook him off, so that’s going to teach me a little bit,” Gagne said. “It’s one of those things where you think you know everything in baseball, but you learn something new every day. “I had him set up perfect for a changeup, but I didn’t throw it. I got a little greedy and got really into the crowd. I wish I had thrown a changeup, but you can’t take it back now.” … Read entire article »
