Movie Monday: Foreign Correspondent

Alfred Hitchcock was one of the best directors of the 20th Century. His movies are not provocative societal commentary, he never won a competitive Oscar award, and yet his body of work is not only prolific, but high-quality as well. I am amazed at how many people who have never seen classics like North by Northwest or Rear Window will watch much of the mediocrity that Hollywood churns out. Movie Monday: Topper

I’m going to try and discuss a movie every Monday here in my new home. We’ll see how that goes. The first entry is Topper, a whimsical comedy with Cary Grant. I had it on the DVR and it took a while to watch it because we had to do so with the kids in bed. (The description mentioned “liberate a man from his stuffy wife,” and I didn’t want to expose Jackson to a potential anti-marriage movie at this age.) On our bookshelf: The Best Old Movies for Families

Nicole got this book from the library for me, as I love watching old movies, and even better, sharing them with the kids. Jackson loves the Thin Man Series and all the Hitchcock appropriate for him. (See the Rear Window post from earlier this week.) The girls love old movies as well, and we’re talking more than The Wizard of Oz. Why show your kids old movies? The quality of writing/production is better on average, they are entertaining, and well, your kids might learn something. Plus you can share time with them, because you’ll be entertained without feeling like you have to sacrifice your intellect.
